However for the councillors that is not good enough as a number of independent councillors and the Fine Gael councillors will be looking for a reduction in the rates.

Rural pubs are in meltdown, with new information released exclusively to Fine Gael Mayo Deputy John O’Mahony showing that almost 300 pubs a year are closing down, with 54 pubs closed in the last three years in Mayo.

The elected members of Ballina Town Council and the management executive of the council welcomed the striking of their annual budget this week, which saw no increase in the commercial rate for business in the town. Fine Gael councillor Mark Winters told the meeting, “We’re coming off the back of a very hard year for everyone and we have bucked the trend in not increasing the rates on the business people in the town. Everyone worked very hard and long on this budget, the increased efficiencies we have seen and the value for money we have been getting reflects very well on the council management. We’ve only had to increase the rate one year in the last five. We’ve also now started to make a serious push for Ballina to become the destination of choice and our allocation towards the marketing of the town can only lead to good things for the future.”

The county continues to cope with dealing with the severe cold snap — many householders continue to remain isolated; without water as pipes have burst, and struggle to get to work as roads remain hazardous. The forecast for the rest of the week predicts further prolonged cold spells, with road temperatures below zero, snow, ice, and wintry showers — making it the most prolonged cold spell in Ireland since 1963.

While Mayo County Council is dealing with emergency situations there are still people who are in need of assistance, particularly those who need a supply of heating oil, according to Fine Gael councillor Joe Mellett

Fine Gael leader Dep Enda Kenny has welcomed the funding provided by the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs to Mayo during 2009. In total, €61,049 has been provided to 12 beneficiaries.
